half-assed appeal for shareholder divestment from "terror" states
ignoring the most obvious targets
|The DivestTerror report (you have to provide your name and e-mail to read the whole thing) shows that such pension funds have $188 billion invested in the stocks of some 400 companies that provide "critical revenues and advanced equipment and technology," as well as "moral and political cover to the governments" of terror-sponsoring states. ... While shareholder activists will surely welcome this new recruit to their cause, there are glaring omissions in Gaffney's report. ...it names only a dozen...tiptoes around the sleaziness practiced by American companies—including some with strong GOP ties such as Halliburton...[and] only singles out foreign firms.|

return of the MooLatte
moovin' on up
|We figured there was a vast, untapped treasure chest of archaic racial names that DQ was missing out on, so we contacted the spokesman listed on the bring-a-cow press release. Chad Durasa was most helpful:
Q. This drink, it's not the "Mulatto"?
A. No. No. No. "Moo," meaning cow, and then "latte," meaning --
Q. OK. We were thinking of some other possible items, and I just wanted to run them by you. How about the High Yellow Butterscotch Sundae?
A. I'm not sure if I understand what that is.
Q. Just like a sundae with butterscotch topping, but this would be High Yellow butterscotch.
A. You mean like a higher quality?
Q. Yeah. That's just something to consider. We were also thinking -- the MooLatte has three separate flavors, but if you took eight flavors and combined them, you could call it the Octoroonie.
A. Octoroonie?
Q. Yeah.
A. Actually -- wow, that's actually a pretty good idea.|

technology vs. torture
humane prison interrogation?
|The past decade has seen revolutions both in brain-scanning technologies and in drugs that affect the brain's functions. Like personal computers and digital camcorders, these technologies are getting faster, better, and cheaper. And they may have uses in the interrogation room that will render moot debates about the excesses of Abu Ghraib-style treatment of prisoners.|

clearing up the fog
can you forgive them?
|Being wrong about the war may have caused me mild embarrassment among some of my friends on the left, but it has most certainly not cost me entrée into the power salons of Washington. ... Indeed, some former hawks... have enhanced their reputations for thoughtfulness by admitting that they botched this one. But the oddest outcome concerns not those who were wrong about Iraq, but those who were right. The political mainstream shuns them.|

the big payoff for Jamie Foxx?
COLLATERAL
|If all you know of Foxx is from TV sitcoms and movie drool (Breakin' All the Rules), you're in for a shock. This is Foxx's year (his upcoming turn as Ray Charles in Ray takes him to Oscar heights), with the revelations starting here as Max. Foxx fires up the screen with the power and subtlety of a born star. And his teamwork with Cruise is a thing of beauty.|
low budget fright flick
Peter Travers reviews OPEN WATER
|Ever since Open Water scared the cynicism out of the Sundance crowd in January, experts predicted the indie shark flick would take a Blair Witch bite out of the box office when it hit theaters. That time is now.|

Amnesty International report on Darfur in Sudan
Rape as a weapon of war: sexual violence and its consequences
|The testimony of the Sudanese woman given above echoes hundreds of others, collected by Amnesty International, other human rights organisations, UN fact-finding missions and independent journalists. They all describe a pattern of systematic and unlawful attacks on civilians in North, West and South Darfur states, by a government-sponsored militia mostly referred to as "Janjawid"(armed men on horses) or "Arab militia" and by the government army, including through bombardments of civilian villages by the Sudanese Air Force. In these attacks, men are killed, women are raped and villagers are forcibly displaced from their homes which are burnt; their crops and cattle, their main means of subsistence, are burnt or looted.|

Dems drop death penalty from platform
The Online Beat
|During the platform-writing process, the drafting committee quietly removed the section of the document that endorsed capital punishment. Thus, for the first time since the 1980s, Democrats will not be campaigning on a pro-death penalty program.|
